Fall is here! Salted caramel is in the air. Labor day has passed, and in a faux pas that I’m sure
ruffled the feathers of my southern ancestors, I chose to sew not one, but two white blouses.
This post is about Emmie but for more info on the second, Just Patterns’ Kate, click here.
Backstory. While I have been on this journey of curating a whole me-made wardrobe, I have been woefully negligent when it comes to sewing simple staples. I have had one too many days when I go to grab a simple top and come away empty handed. I came across this white combed
cotton lawn, and knew it was time to rectify a hole in my wardrobe.
Once it arrived, I wasted no time opening and twirling this fabric. It was light but stiff upon first inspection. I pre-washed it with other delicate whites and dried on low for 13 minutes (If you decide to put this in the dryer would not recommend any longer than 10-15 minutes. I originally set it for 15 minutes, but pulled it out early because it was bone dry. Otherwise, I would not recommend drying at all.)
I knew that I wanted a blouse and a camisole to go under it. This fabric is very sheer but easy to layer. I waffled back and forth between which blouse I wanted to make before settling on
Seamwork’s Emmie. In this time of pandemic homebodiness, I needed something that was great to lounge in, but that a neighbor or virtual teacher could see me in without fright (theirs) or embarrassment (mine). Emmie fit that bill.
I sewed Emmie in a single layer with french seams. I sewed it in a size 12 with a 2 inch full bust adjustment. I hand sewed in two hook & eye closures. I should have added another two inches in length, but it was forgotten. She is still cute, but it is something to note for next time. There will definitely be a next time. I would love to see this in a flowy viscose like this.
I love the versatility of these two pieces. I can grab them together or separately. They pair with everything and they layer beautifully. They are great additions to my year round wardrobe and they are easy to care for. Bonus points for making me look like I thought about getting dressed.
